Before moving into your new home, there are plenty of things to organise!
As the big day approaches, it’s easy to feel stressed. That’s why B&M has created this definitive “moving into a new house” checklist - to ensure you are prepared and organised prior to your moving date.
From making sure you don’t forget important admin tasks to getting ready to start packing, you’ll find all the guidance you need right here.
Make Clear Lists
Get yourself a new notepad or project book and make a complete list of everything that should be done before moving day. Keep that list somewhere easy to find, with a pen always in reach.
It’s a good idea to set out both daily and weekly tasks. Don’t get too rigid with your timescales - just make sure that you stick to the deadlines you set yourself.
Plan Your Timings
Double check the exact date you intend to move in and make sure everyone else in your household is clear on this, too.=
If new residents are moving in as you are moving out, make sure there is no awkward crossover. Find a sensible date and time to book your chosen removals company, and give yourself plenty of time to pack, clean and manage any admin issues before then.
Update Licences, Tax, Insurance and Subscriptions
You’ll need to update your address with your credit card company, vehicle registration and the electoral roll as soon as possible.
Let council tax services and energy suppliers know that you’re moving, and arrange for a new TV licence if one is required.
You should arrange mail redirection services at the post office, too.
B&M Top Tip: Make sure you purchase home insurance for the new property.
Invest in Storage
Cardboard boxes are the classic solution to get everything safely packed away, as they’re easy to arrange and stack.
However, they aren’t always very durable - and certainly not waterproof. Consider picking up lidded storage boxes made of recycled materials in order to properly protect your belongings.
Clear boxes are also handy, as it’s easy to see what’s inside - meaning you won’t need to rifle through all your containers in order to find a particular item.
Try to find boxes with clip lids so that they don’t open accidentally in transit.
Clean and Tidy
Most people like to leave their property as neat as possible for the next residents, so we recommend picking up products to achieve this as part of your moving house checklist.
Not only is this a respectful thing to do, but if there’s any cleaning to be done in your new home, you’ll already have all the supplies!
B&M Top Tip: The basic cleaning products you’ll require are likely to include dusters, antibacterial wipes and sprays, scrubbing brushes of different sizes, a dustpan and brush and a mop.
