National Walking Month: 5 Steps to Get Active in May

28 April 2023

In today's hectic world, it can be hard to find time to get out and get active. However, walking is a cheap and easy way to keep physically and mentally fit while improving your health.

With May being host to National Walking Month (as well as Walk to School Week, 15-19 May) what better time to celebrate the power of a few steps? Here are 5 easy tips to get more steps in.

Walk on your lunch break

One way to increase your daily steps is to take a walk during your lunch break. If you work in an office, you likely spend most of your day sitting at a desk. Walking during your lunch break can help you clear your mind, get some fresh air, and increase your daily activity level.

Get out of bed earlier

Another way to increase your daily steps is to get out of bed that little bit earlier and take a morning walk. This may seem hard, but once you get into the habit, it can become a refreshing start to your day!

Walk the kids to school

If you have kids, why not walk them to school instead of driving? Not only will this help you increase your daily steps, but it also sets a great example for your children while avoiding the dreaded school run. Walking to school can help them get some exercise, and it's an excellent way to bond with them before the start of the day.

B&M Top Tip: We know not everyone lives close enough to walk, so why not park up 5-10 mins away and walk from there You’ll reduce air pollution around the school while getting your steps in!

Walk for the morning paper instead of driving

If you enjoy getting the morning paper, try walking to the shop instead of driving. It's an easy way to get some extra steps in your day and start your morning off on the right foot. It's also a great way to get some fresh air and enjoy the morning scenery.

This may not seem like a huge change, but it can make a big difference in the long run. Walking up and down the stairs can help you burn calories and strengthen your leg muscles, too.

All in all, walking is an excellent way to stay active and improve your health. Following these five tips can help you increase your daily steps and become more active from day one.
