A new year usually heralds a change, and so it’s a perfect time to start giving your home interior a bit of a facelift. If you’re wondering how to transform your living room on a budget – or any other room for that matter - we have some fantastic low budget interior design tips for you to check out.

We show you that with the help of value-for-money items and some clever design hacks, you can turn your home around without breaking the bank!

1. Clear out the clutter

The first step to a room transformation is to clear out the clutter. Excess ornaments, books and accessories can make a room look chaotic and messy. In the words of Japanese organising consultant, Marie Kondo, if an item is not useful or if it doesn’t make you happy – get rid of it. You’ll be surprised how much stuff you clear from your life this way!

The undersink cupboard, pictured below, is perfect if you’re wondering how to transform your bathroom on a budget. Towels, facecloths, haircare products and all the other tubs, bottles and jars can be tidied away and kept out of sight. Plus it's in our January clearance - £29.99 reduced to £19.99. Check out the other items on our furniture sale here.

With all the other things that you've chosen to keep, not everything needs to be on display. When it comes to doing up a room, storage is your friend. Anything from shelving to cupboards, under bed crates and ottomans are brilliant storage solutions for the home.

2. New fabrics

If it’s your bedroom that’s undergoing a transformation, treat yourself to some new bed sheets. If it’s your lounge, invest in some new cushions and throws. Whether it is flashes of colour or muted neutrals, new fabrics really lift a room and are a really cheap way of enhancing a space.

The vintage lace bedding, below, is complete value for money at £19.99 - and can transform a drab bedroom in to a boudoir fit for a queen in no time!

3. Paint!

No guide to how to furnish on a budget would be complete without mentioning the transformative powers of a bit of paint. The colour you choose is a personal choice, but here’s a few design tips:

  • To make a room look bigger, go for one neutral colour. Greys, whites and creams open up a room, and provide a blank canvas for furniture, framed pictures and other home furnishings that you choose to display.
  • If you’re fixed on painting your room a dark rich colour, try having a statement wall with this shade, and painting the other walls a paler, complementary colour.
  • If you’re trying to create a bigger space, paint your ceiling the same, pale colour as the walls. This reduces the amount of contrast so you’re less aware of where the walls end and the ceiling begins.

Did you know that B&M has an extensive painting and decorating department - check it out and decide what shade your next paint job will be!

4. Lighting

Lighting has a transformative effect on a room. Natural light makes a space look airy and bright. However, if you have a north facing room with less natural light, work with it. An area that lacks a good source of light can be transformed into a dramatic and intimate space – you just need the correct light fittings. Uplights and soft, accent lighting can create a relaxed and comfortable sanctuary for resting, reading and watching TV.

There is a huge choice available in our lighting department. Visit one of our stores to see which kind of light would complement your room. The lamp below is the Mirror Glitter Lamp - perfect for hallways and reception rooms - and an amazing £14.99.

5. Mirrors

We love a big statement mirror. Not only is it functional and perfect for last minute checks before you leave the house, it can make a room look a whole lot bigger. From floor length mirrors in the bedroom to large fireplace mirrors in the lounge, every room benefits from this kind of feature. The small ornate oval mirror below is ideal for hallways and cloakrooms and a purse-friendly £3.99.
