Summer is a great time to explore the full potential of your outdoor space! The weather is generally hotter and drier, so spending time outside is more of an attractive concept than at any other time.
However, you also need to make sure your garden is healthy and well managed so that you can continue to enjoy it. That’s why we’ve put together a few summer garden maintenance tips, which you can find below.
Caring for Your Lawn
Lawn maintenance is a key part of summer garden care. In very dry weather, you’ll need to water the lawn to keep it rich, green and healthy.
Larger lawns may require an irrigation system - such as sprinklers - but a good hose with a spray gun attachment works perfectly for most.
You can also keep your grass nourished with a little lawn feed and conditioner.
B&M Top Tip: Rake your lawn regularly to prevent it from getting clogged up with cut grass, dead leaves and debris.
Feeding and Watering Your Garden
Summer is a great time to grow plants - but they can become dehydrated with too much sun and not enough rain.
Whether your plants are in beds or pots, watering your garden with a watering can regularly but lightly is a good way to keep greenery lush and flowers blooming.
Tackling Weeds and Pests
Almost all plants get bigger and healthier in summer - including weeds.
Don some gardening gloves and set to work digging up invasive plants by hand - or, for something less time consuming, opt for a weed killer that operates below the soil surface, killing both the plant and the root to prevent regrowth.
Turning soil regularly with a spade can also prevent weed growth.
B&M Top Tip: You should also be sure to protect your plants from pests by using specialist repellents and keeping your soil healthy with compost.
Pruning
Keep larger plants neat and well-shaped with gentle pruning.
B&M Top Tip: Not only is pruning a key care tip to keep wild summer growth under control, but removing dead or damaged limbs means that the others will grow stronger and healthier, and concentrating the sap of fruit trees to a smaller area will result in larger, juicier produce!
You can keep your outdoor spaces looking their best throughout the warmer months with this list of handy summer garden maintenance tips - from managing your lawn and plants to preventing invasions from weeds and pests and pruning back unwieldy growth!
