5 DIY Gifts That Mum Will Actually Love For Mother's Day

27 February 2020

The best Mother’s Day gift ideas are the ones with heart. Almost everyone can remember coming home from school with Mother’s Day crafts that ended up as a beautiful mess, but of course, not all DIY gift ideas end up in disaster!

In this article, we’ve come up with some perfect gifts that mum will love - all of which can be easily made by hand.

Wall Decor

Why not jazz up an existing home accessory to make something both useful and beautiful? We love the idea of adding ribbons, faux flowers or other decorative elements to a simple hanging mirror.

Calligraphy

Does your mother figure have a favourite poem or saying? For something meaningful and very personal, calligraphy is an easy DIY option that costs very little but means a whole lot.

First, practice your writing style a few times on scrap paper with a pencil, then with a pen and finally with the final tool. This may be a fine paintbrush, a fountain pen - or anything else!

Now pick some beautiful paper and set to work. Make sure you have backup sheets just in case.

You should have lots of light and plenty of time. When the writing is dry, decorate the page with illustrations; carefully glue on curls of colourful ribbon or even add glitter and sequins!

B&M Top Tip: choose a beautiful frame as a finishing touch.

Candle Holders

These pretty, fun gifts are hard to get wrong! Simply invest in a few plain tealight holders, paint the bases with glue, then roll them carefully in glitter or sequins.

These make great gifts for mum that will be admired by all her friends and family. They look like designer accessories, adding a little sparkle to a room.

Painting

If you’re feeling really ambitious, why not create a new piece of artwork for your special lady to hang on her wall?

A modest-sized canvas can be very affordable and adds a touch of class. You’ll need good paints and a varied set of brushes to create different effects. You can also use different media for interesting visual textures, from sand to tissue paper.

Choose a subject that is very simple and won’t require too much detail. Make sure the colours you’re using fit the palette of the room in which the picture will hang.

Draw out the picture with a pencil as a guide before you start, and make sure there’s enough time for the work to properly dry afterwards.

B&M Top Tip: practice drawing your image a few times. Experiment with paints and brushes to find your ideal effects and textures.

Decoupage Hobby Journal

This DIY Mother’s Day gift encourages your special lady to pursue the things she loves. Find a plain, sturdy notebook. Print images relating to her hobby from online or find them in magazines. Cut them out and glue them carefully and artistically to the cover.

Add cut-out or calligraphic lettering too, showing what the journal is for. To keep the delicate cover protected, you can invest in a clear plastic cover.

Any of the creative ideas above will make perfect DIY gifts for Mother’s Day, whether the main lady in your life loves art, beautiful accessories and decor or just a little inspiration.
