  • Fences made from simple posts and woven or barbed wire are always cheapest due to the affordability of those materials. However, they don’t always make for the most attractive of outdoor spaces.

The next cheapest option is the installation of pre-constructed fence panels. One 6 x 3 panel from B&M costs £17.99.

Of course, it’s always cheaper to plan and install a garden fence yourself than to use the services of professional landscape or garden designers.

  • Mark the location of each post and dig a hole for each. Holes should be around three times the post’s width and a third as deep as the pole’s length.

Fill the bottoms with gravel to help drainage. Set the posts in concrete, bracing them to keep them straight as it dries. Otherwise, you can use support spikes.

Attach fence panel clips to the posts using galvanised nails. Once in place, slot each panel into the clip and secure it with more galvanised nails.

Panels should be 6-7cm off the ground to prevent rot. Close the gaps with gravel boards.

  • There is a wide range of garden paving available depending on your tastes. Natural stone paving suits more rustic, traditional landscape design while smoother paving stones with straight edges look a little more modern.

Whether you use stone or composite paving slabs, high quality materials can help your patio to last for up to 50 years.

  • You can lay patio slabs without cement, and it can actually help with drainage, but you need a good base to make it safe and secure.

You’ll need to remove at least 10.5cm of soil from the area to be paved, then line the area with 2cm of gravel and fill it up with sharp sand. Sprinkle over a little water.

Place your paving slabs down and fill the gaps up with more sand. Add what feels like “too much”, then sprinkle more water and leave it for a few days. The grains will gradually sink into the cracks.
